Tips for Choosing the Best Electric Fireplace Insert

Mentioned here are a number of brands and models for your selection. Each insert will serve your specific needs and functions. The following tips offer you some ideas for considering when you are selecting your special fireplace insert.

1. Buy a Fireplace Insert that will Satisfy Your Needs

You have scoured all the fireplace inserts and have decided on a certain one that will meet your objectives. Read below some additional tips to help you make the right choice and you will not be disappointed.

2. Features and Operational Considerations

Electric fireplace inserts are available with many features and have a variety of styles and designs, power and functions. Features you will consider are listed below.

  • Flame Effects

A quality product will produce dazzling, dancing, and flickering flames where it looks like a real log-burning fireplace. Some flame effects are great while some are mediocre. Be sure to read the faux flame descriptions carefully to get what you want.

  • Functionality

You get what you pay for as the saying goes. For high quality functionality you will want to choose an electric fire insert that provides a remote control. You might want the unit’s flame speed, variable flame colors, an on/off timer, flame dimming and brightness level control, and a unit that is cool to the touch so children and pets are not burned.

  • Power Considerations

You might want a unit that puts out heat for a 400-square foot space, or you might need a fireplace that will heat a 1000-square foot area. Electric fireplaces have several heating systems for your specific requirements. One is a fan forced directional air system and it will heat 400-square feet. The other is an infrared (IR) heating system. Electric fireplaces evenly heat the room whichever system you choose. Circulated by the room’s humidity, the Infrared (IR) heat is absorbed by the heat exchanger and dispersed into the room with a quiet fan. It will support 1000-square feet with heat. If heating a large room is up for consideration, purchasing the IR system will be more effective. Most fireplaces do not use the IR system, yet it is worth mentioning for your space and heat considerations.

  • Traditional or Contemporary Modern Styles

Traditional—Designed the same as a classic fireplace, the fireplace insert firebox has the faux flame effect with the heat on or heat off. The time-honored traditional style is fashionable and complements your home style and décor.

Contemporary—Today’s contemporary electric fireplace insert is trendy and stylish to complement your home décor. The firebox has glass or resin embers for an authentic fire look, and a number of units provide embers of crushed glass for an elegant look rather than typical log sets. Both traditional and contemporary run off electricity.

  • Safety

Safety features to consider are UL listed cords and that is mandated in the U.S. Thermal overload protectors are standard and some units have more certifications. You definitely want a unit that is cool if you touch it. The biggest safety concern is electrical. These units have a 3-prong grounded plug and they should be plugged into a standard 120-Volt outlet that has 3 holes indicating it is grounded to the earth. Never defeat this safety system by purchasing a 2-inch adapter plug that has 3 prongs then inserting into the old-style wall outlet with only two holes. It will not be grounded, since there is not the third hole for grounding and this method can cause fires. It’s a cheap fix and could be an expensive fire to put out.

If you hardwire the unit you will no doubt be savvy about the wire gauges available (AWG). Never use an extension cord that does not match the cord installed on the unit. It can overheat and cause a fire.

Final Thoughts

The electric fireplace inserts allow you to retrofit to your existing masonry fireplace, or replace one you want to upgrade. The insert is an energy efficient economical option. Inserts are fundamentally modular fireboxes to be installed into an opening. You will have an authentic flickering flame effect. It can be used yearly because it runs with or without heat while still generating flames and heat if that’s your choice. These units will enhance your décor and are visually appealing. Since they are cool to touch, children and pets will not be burned. Electric fireplace inserts run on electricity, therefore no combustible fuel goes into the environment, and everyone is going green in today’s society. Electricity is less expensive to run and in the final analysis, you save by not having to purchase wood logs, pay for expensive natural gas, or gas gel.

Take time to read customer reviews to learn what others have to say about their electric fireplace inserts. Make some notes highlighting the pros and cons. Shop wisely by comparing your purchasing choices and you will be satisfied.

WARNING TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE

1. Do not place any objects such as furniture, papers, clothes, and curtains closer than 3 feet (0.9 m) to the front of the heater and keep them away from the sides and rear when the heater is plugged in.

2. Do not place the heater near a bed because objects such as pillows or blankets can fall off the bed and be ignited by the heater.

3. Always unplug heater when not in use.

4. Always plug heaters directly into a wall outlet/receptacle. Never use with an extension cord or relocatable power tap (outlet/power strip).

5. Check your heater cord and plug connections. A loose fitting outlet can cause the plug to overheat or cause a fire. Be sure plug fits tight in the outlet. Check frequently during use to make sure plug and outlet are not hot. If so, discontinue using heater and have outlet replaced by a qualified electrician.

Note: Heaters draw more current than small appliances, overheating of the outlet may occur even if it has not occurred with the other appliances.
